Thoughtlessness

Late this afternoon I’m going to a surprise Father’s Day Party. The honoree is a chocoholic, so I'm making another batch of the Mint-Chocolate brownies I made on Thursday for my car-pool buddies birthday/company picnic. I told my friend who’s organizing the surprise I'd make a double batch. My cooking gig for Saturday night was canceled, so I didn’t make the pie with the Vodka crust, but I did meet Dr. Whiny Esq., and his camping partner, for dinner. (btw – The doctor says it’s normal for the discoloration to be moving around my foot and leg. He says there was a lot of blood – and as the body tries to absorb/get rid of the blood, it moves it around for easier displacement. Or something like that. I’m not a doctor. I just know he didn’t gasp and go OMG you’re going to die. And for that, I’m grateful. Now back to the brownies)

On the way home from dinner I stopped at the store, got more eggs and cocoa powder so I could make the double batch. I got up at 6:15 this morning and did dishes from yesterday. (I also made coffee) I began cooking: melted the butter, measured out the cocoa powder, mixed it together, added the brown sugar, and the regular sugar, the vanilla - and realized - OH SHIT. I didn't DOUBLE anything. *sigh* So - I'm just going to cut the squares small. They're pretty rich anyway - and the recipe calls for cutting 25 squares out of a 9 x 9 pan. On Thursday I only cut 9 out of the 9 x 9. I guess it will all work out ok. STUPID WANDERING MIND WHEN I'M COOKING.

How can I be thinking of so many things early in the morning? Isn’t that suppose to be “quiet time”? But not my mind. I’m thinking I need to write a father’s day tribute. Which leads me to think about, “The Flume Tender’s Cabin”, which brings me to C.Horsey, which leads me to Didi, and then writing about making Bourbon, and how it’s different than Scotch, which leads to Scotland, and Dilly, who is linked to Blue and cameras, which leads to future travel plans to Pennsylvania and California in January of ’09. In turn I think about my trip week after next to Alabama, making hotel reservations, finishing setting up customer appointments, then the trip to Mississippi in July, and am I going to go to TEXAS OR NOT?? Then the regional seminars … will I be in Louisiana this year? What about Arizona and California?

It’s a wonder anything gets cooked at all – or that it’s edible when it comes out of the oven.

The brownies are cooling. I’m getting ready for church. I’m picking up and bringing home Godzilla Girl. (Need to remember to go by the Wine Merchant, buy a bottle of red to go with the Lasagna and some whole bean coffee from Whole Foods on the way home).

When I get home, I’ll make the layer of mint filling, call my parents, read the Sunday paper, FOLD MY LAUNDRY – SO-HELP-ME-GOD, make and spread the chocolate frosting and then head out for the party.

Hope your day is equally – “engaging”.
