Accepted!!

Josiah and I are going to school!

Since 1997 the Meredith College Departments of English and Community Outreach have sponsored a writing workshop for women who are writing, who want to write, or who want to try writing. The workshop offers instruction, and critique of manuscripts.

This one week course, Focusing on Form will guide you in the form of your choice: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or using journals as a source of creative writing.

Workshop Coordinator Ahsley Hogan has been writing poetry and fiction since grade school. She has an M.A. from North Carolina State with a concentration in creative writing, and has taught creative writing, composition, and American literature at Appalachian State University, North Carolina State University, and Meredith College. Her work has appeared in Cold Mountain Review, Brightleaf, and at www.imperfectparent.com.

I was accepted into the Fiction Section which has this outline:

In this course, designed for writers already working on fiction, we will explore character development, story structure, story beginnings, setting and voice. In the workshop, the class will read and respond to participants' works in progress, evaluation strengths, and work to diminish flaws in their manuscripts.

Louis Hawes the author of more than a dozen novels, including The Vanishing Point, a 2005 Book Sense and Bank Street College Pick and NY Public Library Best Read for the Teenager will lead this course.

Hawes currently teaches at the Spaulding University MFA in Writing Program in Louisville, KY. She has served as the writer in residence at the University of New Mexico and John Gresham Visiting Author at the University of Mississippi. She has taught locally at UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, Duke, and Meredith.

I am so excited!! Meredith College has a good reputation, so I'm not worried this will be a bunch of "wanna-be" authors sitting around giving useless advice. I have been waiting to hear whether or not I'd get accepted - and fearful that I'd be found lacking. But no! I'm in! Yippy. Let the rejoicing begin.

ps: I hold the option to complain about said course and instructor in reserve, should the need arise.
